Vita

Born in Milan, Italian bass Diego Maffezzoni has established himself as a compelling interpreter of the Italian bass repertoire, combining a warm, resonant voice with an engaging stage presence and a repertoire that continues to expand from Mozart and Rossini to the great Italian bass roles of Verdi and Puccini. Alongside his operatic work, he is equally at home in the concert repertoire, ranging from Bach and Mozart to the great Romantic masters.

Highlights of the 2025/2026 season include Colline in La Bohème at the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza under Vincenzo Milletarì in a production directed by Leo Nucci, José Castro in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West at the Festival Pucciniano di Torre del Lago under Daniel Oren, and Lieutenant (Zuniga) in Bizet’s Carmen at the Festival della Valle d’Itria under Fabio Luisi in Denis Krief’s new production of Bizet’s original 1874 version. The following season brings another important Verdi role debut as Tom in Un ballo in maschera.

In 2024, Diego Maffezzoni made his debut at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb as Colline in La Bohème under Giorgio Morandi in a production by Mario Pontiggia, returning to the role for its revival the following season. He also appeared at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Prokofiev’s The Gambler under James Latham-Koenig in David Pountney’s acclaimed production. Further engagements have included Timur in Turandot, Don Prudenzio in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims, Dottor Grenvil in La traviata and Colline in La Bohème, the latter following his success at the 2025 Norma Fantini Opera Contest.

A graduate of the Conservatorio „Giuseppe Verdi“ in Turin, where he earned diplomas in both Chamber Vocal Music and Viola, Diego Maffezzoni continued his artistic development at the Accademia del Belcanto „Rodolfo Celletti“ in Martina Franca and the Accademia di Fiesole.

Alongside his operatic career, Diego Maffezzoni is a sought-after concert performer. His repertoire includes Bach’s St Matthew Passion and St John Passion (Jesus), Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Mass in C major, Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle and Stabat Mater, Haydn’s Stabat Mater and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. As a recital artist, he has devoted programmes to Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Ravel, Liszt and Shostakovich, appearing at venues including the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, reflecting the breadth of an artistic profile that extends well beyond the operatic stage.
