Vita

Armenian tenor Tigran Melkonyan is rapidly gaining international recognition through a succession of important lyric tenor engagements across Europe and the Middle East. Alongside his position as a principal soloist of the Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Yerevan, the 2026 season marks his debut in the United Kingdom as Alfredo Germont in Verdi’s La traviata at both The Grange Festival and the Buxton International Festival, following recent appearances at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and the Royal Opera House Muscat.

A graduate of the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan, where he completed his Master’s degree with honours, Melkonyan joined the Young Artists Opera Program of the Armenian National Opera before becoming a company soloist in 2022. The same year he was selected as one of only twelve singers worldwide to participate in the prestigious George Solti Accademia di Bel Canto, where he worked with distinguished artists including Richard Bonynge, Barbara Frittoli, Roberto Frontali and Jonathan Papp. He continues his vocal studies with Antonio Lemmo.

His operatic repertoire already encompasses many of the central lyric tenor roles, including Alfredo (La traviata), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), the Young Gypsy in Rachmaninoff’s Aleko, Agrippa in Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel, as well as leading roles in the Armenian operas Anoush and Almast. International engagements have included Little John in Michele Dall’Ongaro’s Robin Hood at the Teatro Petruzzelli and the Royal Opera House Muscat, Agrippa in The Fiery Angel at the Teatro Petruzzelli, and Jacob Schmidt in Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. In spring 2026 he returned to the Teatro Petruzzelli as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata under Jordi Bernàcer in Sofia Coppola’s celebrated production.

An increasingly sought-after concert soloist, Melkonyan has appeared with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, performing works including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mozart’s and Dvořák’s Requiems, Liszt’s Faust Symphony and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. His collaborators include conductors Diego Fasolis, Jordi Bernàcer, Eduard Topchjan, Karen Durgaryan, Petras Bingelis and Günter Neuhold.

A laureate of numerous international vocal competitions, Tigran Melkonyan has received Third Prize and the Audience Prize at the Fausto Ricci International Competition, the Audience Prize at the Maria Caniglia International Competition, First Prize at the Romansiada International Competition, Second Prize at the St. Petersburg International Competition, and was a finalist at the Opera Crown International Vocal Competition in Tbilisi.
